Portland Startup Aims to Help Restore Hearing

PORTLAND, Ore – The ability to hear the world around us is something most of us have been able to experience since birth. Unfortunately, for 360 million people in the world, this is not their reality. If not addressed properly, hearing loss can go on to negatively affect an individual’s success in the classroom and work, and can push or keep those individuals below the poverty line.

This is where Audibility comes in to help. Audibility is a new headphone company based in Portland, Ore. Its mission is to restore hearing by delivering hearing aids to those who need them, but can’t afford them. Audibility does this by utilizing a giving model where for every pair of headphones sold, the company donates proceeds to its partner foundation to provide access to hearing aids for those in need.

“As someone who has worn hearing aids for most of my life, I became interested in developing a way to deliver hearing to those in need,” said the founder of Audibility, Brian Carter, when asked to discuss where he got the idea for Audibility.

Currently Audibility is getting ready to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of its wired ear bud model. The company hopes to later develop a wire-free version of its product. Both products feature a custom-fit ear mold so that users can create an ear bud that fits their own unique ‘ear print’. The ear mold also reduces background noise and prevents sound leakage, resulting in both a better sound and comfort.

“One of the first steps when receiving hearing aids is to make a custom ear mold in order to make sure they fit properly and can be worn for extended periods of time. Similar to fingerprints, no two people have the same ear pattern – we call these ear prints. We want Audibility’s custom ear mold to not only deliver comfort and quality to our customers, but also make them feel that they belong to a part of a larger community that is helping to restore hearing across the world,” said Carter.

Audibility is working on launching its first Kickstarter campaign coming this fall. People can learn more about Audibility, its mission, and products at audibilityheadphones.com or by following it on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, or Facebook.
